Camden Fringe preview: Miracle The Musical

Yuko Cao is producing Miracle The Musical at Camden Fringe this year, and offers us some insight into building and sharing the show.

“Have you waited for the owl that carries the magical letter to knock on your window?

In Miracle the Musical, a young girl born without magic receives an unexpected invitation to the most prestigious magical academy. But is it as miraculous as it seems?

Or is it a deceitful plan, a deadly vengeance, a hidden secret that crawls in the dark? Fight or flight — now she must choose.”

Where: The Cockpit, Bridewell Theatre

When: 30-31 Jul, 24 Aug

What’s your show about and what inspired it?

Miracle the Musical is a coming-of-age story set in a magical world — or at least, it seems to be.

It follows Miracle, a non-magical girl who receives a mysterious invitation to an elite academy of magic. Against her powerful mother’s wishes, she enrolls, hoping to finally belong.

But instead of finding answers, she unearths hidden truths, ideological divides, and a darkness that has followed her longer than she realizes.

We were inspired by the “chosen one” trope in fantasy stories — and wanted to subvert it. What if the girl who was “chosen” wasn’t magical at all? What if the real miracle wasn’t power, but healing?

The show combines whimsical fantasy with psychological depth and emotional resonance, exploring identity, friendship, cultural displacement, and inner strength.

Why should someone book to see your show and what might they expect?

Miracle blends the immersive magic of fantasy with heartfelt, introspective storytelling. It’s female-led, cross-cultural, and emotionally layered — like Matilda meets Steven Universe with a touch of Studio Ghibli.

Audiences can expect a vibrant cast, a rich original score, and characters that feel both magical and deeply human.

If you’ve ever longed to fit in, questioned your path, or battled your inner demons — this show is for you. It’s not just about defeating the villain; it’s about confronting what’s within.

How did you make your start in the business?

I graduated from the MA Musical Theatre Producing programme at Goldsmiths in 2022, where Miracle actually began as one of our graduation musicals.

It’s since grown beyond the classroom, shaped by a diverse, international team of collaborators. I’ve always believed in stories that centre underrepresented voices — and the Fringe is the perfect place to take risks and build something bold and personal from the ground up.

Do you have a favourite type of venue to work in?

We love intimate, unconventional spaces that let the audience get close — physically and emotionally.

Miracle is designed to be immersive, so places like The Cockpit and Leith Arches are ideal: raw, character-filled venues where imagination can transform a space into something magical.

It’s less about grandeur and more about connection.

What’s next for the show?

After Camden and Edinburgh Fringe, we hope to develop Miracle further with a view to a longer immersive run — perhaps in site-specific venues or festivals across the UK and beyond.

A studio cast recording is also in development. Long term, we see Miracle as both a full-scale musical and a flexible, adaptable experience that can be shared with different communities. This is just the beginning.
