American writer/performer Michelle Johnson is heading to the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time with her show Extra Dry. Here, she tells us more about it and what she is really looking forward to in Scotland.

What is the show about and where did the idea come from?
Extra Dry is a solo show about a young woman who grapples with the desire to be remembered by her peers. After years of feeling insignificant, she discovers that when she is drunk, others find her much more entertaining. She is left questioning if her significance in others’ stories is worth the risks involved.
After seeing solo shows on my two visits to the Fringe in 2023 and 2024, I was inspired to write a personal story and turn it into an adaptation for the stage. And here we are!
How would you sell it to an audience in one paragraph?
Extra Dry welcomes you into the mind of someone who is craving your attention. Your presence gives her joy and comfort, which she had previously been denied. However, the craving soon turns dark, as she discovers the stories about herself she had so long desired are dripping with unease surrounding her newfound addiction.
Do you like participating in the Fringe? Are there any stand-out memories?
I have not performed at the Fringe in the past; however, I attended twice as a spectator and love the buzzing energy reverberating throughout Edinburgh during August. I love stumbling upon new work and experiencing new types of performance. For example, I’d never seen a clown show before 2023! I understand going as a spectator is TOTALLY different. I am looking forward to the challenge!

What’s next for the show?
Honestly, that all depends on how it goes at Fringe! I would love to bring it back to New York or do a run in another city. It will be interesting to see how the show is received in Edinburgh, and perhaps we will make some changes as we go along. I am also itching to write another piece, so we will see what happens!
