Edinburgh Fringe preview: Edith Alibec on The Void

“Edith has a void. You probably have one too – but somehow you know what to do with yours and she doesn’t. A Romanian clown from somewhere slightly outside the human experience, she’s on a desperate, deadpan mission: ask the audience what fills the void, then try everything they suggest. Work? Love? Snacks? Playful, melancholic and quietly devastating – a debut clown hour where nothing gets resolved – somehow that’s okay.”

Where: Cinema Room at PBH’s Free Fringe @ Banshee Labyrinth

When: 8-30 Aug

What can you tell us about your show? What is it about and where did the idea come from?

The show is about the void – that feeling of emptiness we all carry and desperately try to fill. I’ve tried many things to fill mine, but nothing worked, so I’m bringing it to the stage to ask everyone – I’m sure someone has a solution.

How would you sell it to audiences in one paragraph?

Come and let’s fill the void together. Or be swallowed by it.

Do you enjoy participating in the Fringe? And do you have any moments you particularly remember?

Yes! One year I had a show at the Canons’ Gait and there was no one there, so a friend went upstairs and brought people in – fifteen lads. At the end, it turned out they were the technical crew for Oasis. It was really fun, we took pictures together and then they invited me to the Oasis concert in Edinburgh – where of course I went and had a blast.

What are you looking forward to the most in Edinburgh?

Watching shows fromLillas Multipass, Maya Ricote, Lawrence Dodd, Zoe Wohlfeld and other shows that I’ve heard about that sound really awesome, like Creep.

What’s next for the show?

The Edinburgh run – and after that, who knows. Maybe the void will decide.
