Camden Fringe preview: Sam Hickman – First Woman

Sam Hickman brings her new solo show-in-progress to the Camden Fringe this month.

“Have you heard of the Bible? Familiar with Adam and Eve?

Well… this has nothing to do with that, but people love an existing IP, so for the sake of marketing, yes, this is the absolutely true and biblically accurate retelling of the first book of the Bible and not a sexy rude harp cabaret about being a trans lady of a certain age (publicly 26 years old).”

Where: Museum of Comedy

When: 13 Aug

So what is your show really about and who is Sam Hickman?

This show is about how the trauma of our past informs the adults we become and the choices we make.

‘The sensational Sam Hickman’ (in the words of the British Comedy Guide) is a singer harpist and comedian based in Cardiff, Wales.

Her debut hour Sexy Rude Harp Concert is often described as ‘critically acclaimed/poorly attended’. And she’s hoping to turn things around this year to ‘critically panned/sold out runs’.

Why should someone come along to see First Woman and what might audiences expect?

First Woman is a musical comedy samstravaganza.

Frequently compared to Cat Cohen, Tom Lehrer and Victoria Wood, the show is a hilarious and thought provoking romp through sex, love, medical transition and the 2002 crime detective procedural Monk.

Prepare for a lot of Harp. You’ve never sat down in front of a harp for an hour, so why not just see what that’s like!?

How did you make a start as a performer?

Shepherd #2 in the school Nativity. That’s where my love for costumes began.

What’s the best compliment anyone has ever given you?

‘Sensational’ -the British Comedy Guide.

‘A movable feast’ – a rather sarcastic voice teacher.

‘A tough cookie’ – a now very successful Opera Singer who wishes to remain anonymous.

What’s next for the show?

Cardiff on 4 September, then hopefully we tighten it up over the winter to bring the Brighton Fringe and Edinburgh in summer 2026. (Showbusiness)
