Edinburgh Fringe preview: Encounter

Writer/performer Zena Wood is bringing Encounter; A Space Cabaret, an original and otherworldly comedy musical, to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

“Live from New York, it’s Space Weather Girl! What if an alien encounter was more human condition and less lasers?

Add some old-time Hollywood charm, a historical “mating program” and quirky TV host, Space Weather Girl – you’ve got yourself a weather show!

As a studio audience, you’ll witness a mysterious broadcast sparking an interplanetary moment.

You’ll gasp at a spectacular alien dance performance and you’ll do all this in a fraction of a second (60 minutes).

It’s a science thing. Come for the space facts, the comedy, the live piano we could afford and find yourself unexpectedly heartwarmed.”

Where: Just the Cask Room at Just the Tonic at The Mash House

When: 31 Jul-24 Aug

Tell me a bit about Encounter! What was the inspiration for the show?

I was really intrigued by this visual I had about a broadcast being interrupted by an unusual visitor… Yes, it turns out to be an alien.

I am inspired by shows that give us a glimpse into the backstage world or the systems of things, like “30 Rock” or “The West Wing.”

Encounter has some of that same tone. Where things are happening during the broadcast, in the studio, and also for the character.

Music, dance and comedy all contribute to Encounter – what should audiences expect?

According to Sci-Fi Musicals, audiences can expect to be unexpectedly heart-warmed! I agree.

Like any comedy musical, the songs drive the story forward. Now, some songs are indeed about ‘five ways to die on Mars,’ but that is also important information.

Audiences can expect to have moments of laughter, reflection, education (science facts!), and wonder at an alien tap dancing.

How did you start in theatre? Do you find Fringe festivals inspiring?

I studied musical theater at Waterfront Theatre College and sketch comedy at The Pit in New York.

The first time I realized I loved comedy was when a broomstick prop unexpectedly broke on stage – I was playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. The audience laughed, and I never forgot that magical moment.

I love the interplay with the audience in the theatre. I also love film but for different reasons. In my writing, I like combining the two styles.

Edinburgh Fringe is a place where artists can really revel in their work and the work of other artists. It’s an incredibly empowering month. The vibe is electric. You meet so many people. I absolutely love it.

What are you looking forward to the most in Edinburgh?

I am excited to play the show. Brandon Weber, who plays Greg, is flying in from New York, and we are going to have a blast.

We are playing every day except August 12, so I am looking forward to the challenge and flow of that. And, of course, I am looking forward to meeting new friends!

There is also this breakfast place which I love near the Pleasance – you will see me there regularly.

What’s next for the show after this?

After this, I am producing some creative projects and shows in Amsterdam, I am taking a rest and planning the next run!
