Plays from the cheap seats: Giant (Royal Court)

Welcome back to our series about cheap seat options available in the West End and slightly beyond.. This week, we are at one of the capital’s venues known for its promotion of new writers, the Royal Court in Sloane Square.

Show and venue

Giant at Royal Court Downstairs – £22.50 ticket, slightly restricted view

Seat

Booked Circle C21

Expectation

I really like the budget options available at this theatre. This seat is at the end of the aisle, perfect for a quick exit at the Circle here is at ground level.

You also have a space beside the seat for coat, bag etc. However I would prefer an armrest that raises rather than the heavy wooden ones, just for comfort and the ability to move more freely.

The curve of the circle that restricts the view very much depends on the production as to how restricted your view will be.

Reality

An excellent view of the stage, as the theatre is relatively small. The restriction related to a sofa on the left-hand side of the stage, although as my seat had no one behind it I was able to lean forward to see the head of whoever was sitting there.

With this play, I feel it is important to watch the reactions of all the characters involved. The seats on the circle slips at this side may well miss anything taking place on or around the sofa.

Evidence

My photo below shows the extent of the restriction before the show started – I will note that when rows A and B were filled the rake was more than sufficient to see over heads in front.

And this is a production shot by Manuel Harlan where the sofa can be seen, to give you an idea of the restriction:
