What can you tell us about your show? What is it about and where did the idea come from?
Remix Roulette is a genre-bending, no-holds-barred, utterly ridiculous night of musical mayhem! We throw down the gauntlet to the audience – any song, any style, you decide. We have no idea what we might be asked to do from show to show. Mad versions we’ve been asked for include a funk take on ‘I Know Him So Well’, an operatic ‘Wannabe’ and a rave ‘Candle In The Wind.’
Fronted by Frisky (Frisky & Mannish, La Soiree, Briefs: Sweatshop) – you’ve got a cabaret diva with 20 years’ experience of titting around with songs, and having fun with packed-out rooms of people.
The show came from a combination of places – taking genre suggestions and live-flipping a song was a small part of Frisky & Mannish, but never Mannish’s favourite part. I (Frisky) then took it into a cabaret dinner show I was doing in Germany, with a four-piece band. I performed it as an act in 4 cities over two years, and I knew there was more fun to be had with it. But I was also really dithering over doing a solo show.
F&M had been such a massive thing; it was really daunting to follow it up. I put so much pressure on myself to make the “perfect” show that, in the end, I realised I was just going to keep finding reasons NOT to do it, unless it couldn’t be perfect. If it was created fresh with the audience every night, I couldn’t put it under the microscope. I just had to trust myself, and let it be!
That show was Frisky’s Reshuffle, which we debuted at last year’s Fringe. This year, having proved to myself that my own brand of nonsense perhaps does have a place in the world, we’re leaning into the chaos and coming back as a whole band of idiots, ready to reinvent music at your whim!
How would you sell it to audiences in one paragraph?
Frisky and her incredible band return after their five-star, smash-hit Frisky’s Reshuffle. Missed it last year? You missed Heavy Metal Madonna, Opera WAP, and rave Teletubbies. You may arrive wanting ABBA in the style of Nine Inch Nails, but leave singing Celine Dion as a sea shanty. Remix Roulette thrives on the unexpected, with astonishing musicianship, big laughs, and the constant possibility of total disaster. An electrifying communal night out, where the audience don’t just watch the show; they make it happen.
Do you enjoy participating in the Fringe? And do you have any moments you particularly remember?
The Fringe is like nowhere else, and it’s been really, really good to me over the years! I have very many memorable moments – performing a parody of a Kate Nash song with Kate Nash in the room, playing Bullseye with Jim Bowen at Underbelly, swapping vocal warm-ups with Dappy backstage at the Radio 1 Fun & Filth Cabaret, and being dragged out onto the Royal Mile at 6am to perform live for breakfast TV. There were very many confused but curious delivery drivers and cleaners…
What are you looking forward to the most in Edinburgh?
I’m looking forward to the audiences. It’s not many places you get to play to such a savvy, fun-loving crowd. They watch a lot, their standards are high, but if you do manage to connect, they really let you know! Most people watching shows at the Fringe LOVE live performance, and very often have really open minds. It’s a joy to share that passion with them, to push them with something new, and have them push you to give the very best you’ve got.
What’s next for the show?
Who knows?! We’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of interest in booking the show; however, it’s not an easy time to tour live music, as the aforementioned Kate Nash famously spoke out about. And sadly, I don’t think I’d make as much for pictures of my arse as she does. So while it’s not easy to say right now, we very much hope to be out and about around the UK very soon, and possibly some lovely bits in Australia too.
