Edinburgh Fringe preview: Geoff O’Flanagan on The Double G Comedy Rodeo

The Double G Comedy Rodeo is the brainchild of ‘Geordie Geoff O’Flanagan’, who packs up the show and takes it to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer.

“A mash-up of chaos, charisma and killer comedy, the Rodeo flips everything you think you know about a comedy show. It’s in-your-face, up-close and happily smashes the fourth wall, pulling the audience right into the action. Expect fast laughs, fearless performances and a show as unpredictable as it is unforgettable. Spontaneity rules, comics bounce off the crowd, moments spiral into mayhem, and somehow it all lands as a perfectly timed, delightfully anarchic experience. Think mad meets bad, led by a ringmaster with a wicked grin and a talent for finding hilarity in the chaos.”

Where: Basement at Laughing Horse @ Home Bar

When: 6-30 Aug

Tell us about the show.

The Double G Comedy Rodeo is a 60-minute journey through what can only be described as organised chaos. From the moment the lights go down to the final laugh, the audience are right at the heart of it. No two shows are ever the same because the crowd becomes the driver, steering the direction of the hour without even realising it.

The fourth wall doesn’t just get broken, it gets completely demolished. One minute we’re telling stories, the next we’re somewhere completely unexpected. That’s the joy of live comedy. The audience and I create something together that only exists in that room, on that day, over those sixty minutes.

At its heart, it’s a celebration of spontaneity, connection and the wonderful unpredictability of people.

How would you sell the show to audiences?

If you enjoy live comedy at its most unpredictable, where anything can happen and usually does, then The Double G Comedy Rodeo is the show for you. Every night is different because every audience is different; you don’t just watch this show, you help create it. It’s a fast-moving, fourth-wall-smashing hour of organised chaos where stories, stand-up and audience interaction collide in ways nobody (including your host) can fully predict.

At its heart, the Rodeo is a celebration of everything that makes live comedy special: spontaneity, connection and those magical moments that can only happen when a room full of strangers comes together for a laugh. Come along, climb aboard and enjoy the ride; just don’t expect to know exactly where we’re going.

Do you enjoy participating in the Fringe?

Absolutely.

There’s something about Edinburgh that feels almost magical. For a few weeks every year, comedians from every corner of the world gather in one city to perform, create and connect with audiences from every imaginable background. It’s difficult to explain unless you’ve experienced it, but there’s something almost spiritual about it.

Every comedian should do the Fringe at least once in their career. For me, though, it always comes back to the audience. The months of planning, writing, work-in-progress shows, self-doubt, excitement, highs and lows all build towards one thing: that hour when people choose to sit in front of you and give you their time.

I have sixty minutes to take them on a journey, make them laugh and hopefully leave them with something memorable. For that reason alone, every second spent at the Fringe is worth it.

What moments do you remember?

I first came to Edinburgh in 2024 with one simple goal: get on as many stages as possible. A spot here, a gig there, another one if I was lucky. The city was alive. Every corner seemed to reveal something new. One minute you’d be watching a comedian you’ve admired for years, the next you’d be chatting to someone performing their very first Fringe.

That’s part of what makes Edinburgh so special. Everyone is there for the same reason: to make people laugh. When I wasn’t chasing stage time, I spent as much time as possible watching comedy. The sheer amount of choice is incredible.

One moment I’ll never forget was watching Dan Tiernan direct proceedings from the stage while Rob Copland crowd-surfed above a room full of delighted audience members. It was absolute madness. The energy, the unpredictability and the audience’s reaction to what was unfolding in front of them perfectly captured everything I love about live comedy.

That was the moment I knew I’d be back. And somewhere between that crowd-surf and the walk home afterwards, the seed of The Double G Comedy Rodeo was planted.

What are you looking forward to most in Edinburgh?

That’s a difficult question because there is so much to look forward to. If I had to pick one thing, it’s that feeling just before a show starts. Watching the audience arrive. Seeing people settle into their seats. Feeling the anticipation build in the room. Some are excited, some are curious, and some are probably wondering what they’ve accidentally bought tickets for. Then the lights go down, and anything can happen.

There’s nothing quite like live comedy when it’s firing on all cylinders. Being up close to an audience, sharing a moment together and creating something unique every night is an incredible feeling. Well, that and the after-party, of course.

What’s next for the show?

I’d love to take The Double G Comedy Rodeo on the road and bring the chaos to audiences around the country. The show was built to be experienced live, and it would be fantastic to see how different audiences shape it in different towns and cities.
But first things first – let’s get through August.
