Edinburgh Fringe preview: Anne O’Sullivan on Becoming Dr Ruth

US actor Anne O’Sullivan is heading to Edinburgh Fringe with her show, Becoming Dr Ruth, based on the sex therapist Dr Ruth Westheimer.

“Dr Ruth Westheimer shattered taboos, making possible frank public conversations about sex and intimacy. With a twinkle in her eye and an infectious giggle, her wise, disarming advice made her into an unlikely household name. This funny and moving solo play charts her astonishing journey from escaping Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport to international celebrity at 50 as TV’s most beloved sex therapist. At just 4’7″, her larger-than-life story proves size doesn’t matter.”

Where: Front Room at Assembly Rooms

When: 6-30 Aug

What can you tell us about your show? What is it about and where did the idea come from?

The idea came from Mark St Germain when he met with Dr. Ruth after she saw his play Freud’s Last Session.  It’s about the famous sex therapist Dr. Ruth K Westheimer,  a great humanitarian who was an orphan of the Holocaust.

How would you sell it to audiences in one paragraph?

I would say what I just said and add that Dr Ruth had courage, brains, wit, and a restless spirit to learn, despite huge challenges.  And who taught Americans how to free themselves from the puritan brainwashing of our culture, through sex education and therapy.

Do you enjoy participating in the Fringe? And do you have any moments you particularly remember?

This will be my first Fringe, and what an adventure we are embarking upon!

What are you looking forward to the most in Edinburgh?

Walking up to that ancient castle in the moonlight.

What’s next for the show?

What’s next?  Taking our play anywhere we can continue to tell the good Doctor’s amazing story!
