Edinburgh Fringe preview: Hannah Platt on Cult Classic

Stand-up comedian Hannah Platt brings her second show. Cult Classic, to Edinburgh Fringe this year.

“Are you a failure? A reject? Alone? Good. Named ‘one to watch’ by Rolling Stone Magazine, cult comedian/leader Hannah Platt is primed to prey on your vulnerabilities and bring you a new show you’ll drink up like Kool-Aid. Following a multi-award-nominated debut, the ‘voice of a new generation’ (Skinny) returns to ask: once you’ve sacrificed everything, should you sacrifice your soul? And can you do it online?”

Where: Attic at Pleasance Courtyard

When: 5-30 Aug

What can you tell us about your show? What is it about and where did the idea come from?

The show is my second hour, called Cult Classic, which came from the idea I’ve had since I was a teenager, that if my life didn’t work out, I could always join a cult and have any responsibility for failure taken away. The show has me looking at if my life did ‘work out’, what success means, and if I’ve just been holding myself up to an impossible standard.

How would you sell it to audiences in one paragraph?

If you’ve ever felt like a failure or an outsider, there’s something in this show for you. If you’ve spent your adult life trying to unprogramme your upbringing, you’ll relate to the story. If you have a favourite cult, I probably have a joke about it. If you want to sacrifice your soul, come on over.

Do you enjoy participating in the Fringe? And do you have any moments you particularly remember?

I love doing the Fringe. I love being in a creative hub and getting to perform every day.

What are you looking forward to the most in Edinburgh?

I get to do my favourite thing every day for a month. And eating haggis.

        What’s next for the show?

I’d love to do a little tour of the show after the Fringe – but let’s see how August goes first.

          What do you think?
