Edinburgh Fringe preview: Meg Millane on Bride To Be

New York City-based comedian and actor Meg Millane returns to the Edinburgh Fringe this year with a new show, Bride To Be, a comedy about wedding planning and the cultural weight of marriage,

“After the success of her debut five-star solo show, Meg Millane is at it again with a new sharp, character-driven comedy about a woman deep in wedding planning. As she navigates cakes, DJs and family expectations, she unravels the history and cultural weight of marriage, forcing herself to confront what commitment actually means to her. Torn between spectacle and substance, she must decide if she’s planning a wedding… or redefining it.”

What can you tell us about your show?

Bride To Be is a high-energy and heartfelt show that combines stand-up, storytelling, characters, and maybe even a dance break or two. The show itself is about the cultural baggage of getting married and being a woman in society. Infused with characters that portray familiar wedding tropes and a playlist that won’t stop, the audience is guaranteed a fun time….and who knows, you might catch the bouquet!

What is it about and where did the idea come from?

We all hit that age in life when suddenly your fall calendar is jam-packed with weddings every weekend! Recently, I was in 3 weddings…4 if you count my own, and I noticed a lot of similar bull shit that brides were going through. There are a lot of opinions when it comes to weddings. I wanted to take a nuanced approach and poke fun at the different viewpoints, while telling the story of my own wedding and what went terribly wrong but ended up being a blessing in disguise.

How would you sell it to audiences in one paragraph?

If you have planned a wedding, been a bridesmaid, or even just attended a wedding as a guest, you will LOVE this show! Bride to Be is a sharp, character-driven comedy about a woman deep in wedding planning. As she juggles cakes, DJs, and mounting family expectations, she begins unraveling the history and cultural weight of marriage — forcing herself to confront what commitment actually means to her. Torn between spectacle and substance, she must decide whether she’s planning a wedding… or redefining it altogether. Playful, poetic, and sharply relevant, Bride To Be offers a fresh feminist take on “I do.”

Do you enjoy participating in the Fringe?

Yes, of course! I have only been to the Fringe once before, but I loved the camaraderie and was inspired by the talent. It felt magical being around so many creative minds and connecting with people from around the world. Plus the bagpipes!!!

And do you have any moments you particularly remember?

I was staying with this amazing Theater Digs host, shout out to Jamie, and I was all alone at my first Fringe. One day, I came home feeling really overwhelmed, and Jamie put on Taylor Swift, and we gabbed about life while his dog cuddled in my lap. It was just a very thoughtful moment; this stranger made me feel so at home and allowed me the space to exhale and detach from the pressure of the festival for the night.

I also had the most fun on my closing night! After selling out (braggggg), me and some friends hit the town! We ended up at one of the outdoor beer gardens and danced the night away to early 2000s pop. Let’s just say the flight home the next day….was rough.

What are you looking forward to the most in Edinburgh?

I am looking forward to the confidence that comes with comfort. Because this is my second time in Edinburgh, I know how things work a little better and hopefully won’t be running around like a chicken with its head cut off again.

I am also so excited to be working with such a dream team! My director, Meaghan McLeod, is able to come to Edinburgh with me. Megs is the best, such a hard worker and great friend! I also love my PR team, shout out Rosaline Hodgetts!! We have worked together in the past, and she is amazing at what she does and so communicative. I am also thrilled to be back at Greenside Venues, this time on the Royal Mile. And Clare McLoughlin, my tech, is already going above and beyond to make sure I pop in Edinburgh!

What’s next for the show?

Philadelphia Fringe Festival this September! And then…I am open to a Broadway transfer if any producers/ investors want to get that going. Feel free to reach out www.megmillane.com.
