Musical review: The Bodyguard at New Wimbledon Theatre

The UK of The Bodyguard stops off at New Wimbledon Theatre, and Helen Cox went along to report on how this musical stands up in its latest run.

This 2-hour and 20-minute show is one of pure joy. This award-winning musical, based on the 1992 film of the same name, is now back with internationally acclaimed actress Sidonie Smith in the lead as Rachel Marron, the pop star.

Adam Garcia plays Frank Farmer, the bodyguard who finds duty turning into desire. At this performance, Rachel’s young son was played by Cale Cole. Sasha Monique is the sister who is the catalyst for the closing scenes, and does a sweet version of “Saving All My Love For You”.

There is a lot of talent on this stage, with both lead and supporting actors offering strong performances. Alexander Dinelaris’s book develops Laurence Kasdan’s screenplay, while director Thea Sharrock and choreographer Karen Bruce allow the dancers to shine.

Tim Hatley’s set and costume design offers effective scene-setting without overwhelming the action. Richard Brooker’s sound was clear and sharp, and Mark Henderson’s lighting offered a sense of atmosphere. Even pyrotechnics and video make an appearance.

The Bodyguard is an entertaining romantic thriller, featuring many classics populated by the film’s star, Whitney Houston. Think “The Greatest Love of All”, “I Want To Dance With Somebody”, and, of course, her cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”.

As a fan of the film, I was gripped from the outset, with those fabulous songs and superb dance routines. The costume changes and lighting effects kept matters interesting as the suspense, romance, and humour piled on.

Smith’s vocals cannot be faulted. Her previous work in West Side Story, Tarzan and Cabaret have served her well. For Garcia, a noted musical theatre performer, the role of Frank is an interesting one as his only song is a deliberately tuneless moment played for laughs.

I’m giving this 4.5 stars.

The Bodyguard continues at New Wimbledon Theatre until 21 Feb, when it continues on tour until 15 Aug. Details and venues here.
