Award-winning comedian Kate Owens presents her smash hit, critically acclaimed comedy show, Cooking With Kathryn.
“Meet Kathryn: the “star” of her own community cookin’ show, wannabe Nigella Lawson, and down-home southern belle with more wine in her veins than Jesus.
She’s serving up a wacked-out fricassee of absurd recipes, but the main course will be a reckoning with her troubled past and a chaotic encounter with a member of the congregation (maybe it’ll be you!).”
Where: Big Belly at Underbelly, Cowgate
When: 31 Jul-24 Aug

Without saying too much, what can audiences expect from your show?
Audiences should come hungry… but maybe not for food! Cooking with Kathryn is unhinged, heartfelt, and messy in every sense of the word. Also you definitely probably won’t get salmonella!
Where did you get the idea to create this show and bring it to Edinburgh?
It started as a simple, funny idea: what if a sweet Southern belle tried to teach a cooking lesson, but she’s so full of repressed rage that she crushes every egg in her hand before it even hits the bowl?
I tried it at an open mic in New York City and it killed—so I kept writing, and Kathryn just kept growing. There’s something that feels really natural to me about smiling through pain, and I’ve loved exploring how far she can take that!
How did you get your start in theatre? Do you find Fringe festivals inspiring?
When I was 12, a friend told me to audition for the school musical and said I needed to bring ‘sheet music.’
I had no idea what a musical even was, so I just printed out the lyrics to ‘Live Like You Were Dying’ from the internet and showed up to sing it a
cappella.
At the audition, the director asked me to hand my sheet music to the pianist,
and I thought, ‘This guy can play piano just by looking at lyrics? That’s amazing!’
He looked at my paper and very gently explained the difference between actual sheet music and my printed lyrics with banner ads.
I was sure I’d blown it, but later that night, my mom got a call that I was cast in the ensemble. And the
rest is history!!!
This will be my first Edinburgh Fringe, and I’m sure I’ll be more inspired than my brain has the ability to process. I love the idea of a bunch of artists coming together, sharing
their work, and hanging out like it’s summer camp.
What are you looking forward to the most at Edinburgh?
Seeing other artists perform, getting out of NYC for a month, and seeing if a few friends wanna go in on buying a castle.
Where can we see your work after Fringe?
I hope you’ll see me back in the UK, performing at Soho Theatre, or doing a run of my show off-Broadway in New York.
I guess you can find out if any of those things are happening by following me on IG! (kate__owens)
