Trying out Theatre Roulette

You have heard of this scheme, which mixes cheaper theatre tickets with a surprise show.

You don’t know until the day before which show you will be seeing (well, unless you get a check-in email from the theatre a few days earlier, which I did).

How does it work?

I booked last year for a show on 7 Feb (only evening performances are available) for £25.

I chose to see a play and was able to remove one title. I’d seen Witness for the Prosecution twice before so out it went.

What shows are available?

The scheme is supposed to cover all shows on in the West End on your chosen date, excluding concerts and short runs.

Although there were some big names like Plaza Suite on the list, they seemed unlikely.

What did I get?

My hunch was for The Play That Goes Wrong or The Mousetrap. It was the former – fine, although I had seen other Mischief shows, I had never caught this one.

How was the seat?

I was in row G, dress circle. The Duchess is a two-level theatre, and I saved £32 on the face value of the ticket. I bought a programme for £5.

The only bit you miss on this row is the very top of the performers’ heads when they are on the raised part of the set. A very tiny inconvenience.

How was the show?

A long-running hoot.

How does it work?

You can book anywhere from the next day to four months ahead. Fri and Sat options cost £30. You can book up to 9 tickets.

Guaranteed stall seats will cost you £45. You can also opt to remove additional shows from the list at a small additional fee.

If you’ve been sent to a show before, you don’t have to exclude it as it will be remembered and will be automatically removed from the list of possibilities.

Would I spin again?

Yes, I plan to try a musical next, later in the year.
