What can you tell us about your show?
I’m performing two shows this Fringe: Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote and It’s a Mystery! [details here, Theatre 2 at @theSpace, 17-22 Aug].
Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote is an interactive screening of an episode of Murder, She Wrote and is a cult hit that tours the UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA. Audiences solve the crime collaboratively using the Fame-o-meter and the Suspiciometer – it’s very silly.
It’s a Mystery! is my one-man show about why we love whodunnits, and draws on my other great obsession: the collected works of Agatha Christie. It examines our love of the genre in the form of an investigation, and is funny, moving and a must for lovers of cosy crime.
What is it about and where did the idea come from?
The name Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote popped into my head one night in London at a pub – and I was delighted to discover that no one had ever thought of doing it before! As a life-long fan of Murder, She Wrote it was just a matter of creating the kind of celebration on stage that I would like to go and see myself.
It’s a Mystery! had been gestating for many years, because I really wanted to know why I and so many others love whodunnits so much, and what needs were being fulfilled in the pages of an Agatha Christie. The show is based on a lot of research, but also draws on my childhood, growing up in the 70s in suburban Brisbane.
How would you sell it to audiences in one paragraph?
For Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote, I’m reminded of feedback I received from a show in Dún Laoghaire (a town in Ireland just south of Dublin, where I performed recently). A woman said, “The only way anyone could not love this show is if you hate joy.”
It’s a Mystery! is a must for lovers of murder mysteries – whether you can’t stop watching Vera, or Columbo, or yearn for the next Richard Osman puzzle. It’s a classic one-man show with plenty of laughs and insights. It’s a joy to perform and watch – don’t miss it.
Do you enjoy participating in the Fringe?
The Fringe is my happy place. There’s nothing like it in the world – the constant buzz and excitement in the streets, the incredible array of entertainment available, the camaraderie from fellow performers. I’m sure Glastonbury and other music festivals are fantastic, but the only festival for me is the Fringe.
And do you have any moments you particularly remember?
My first year at the Fringe, I was asked to host the press showcase for TheSpaceUK, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was there, and I made a very affectionate joke about her, which earned a big laugh. Phoebe threw her head back in a cackle, and I got a big nod of approval. It was on my first day at the Fringe!
What are you looking forward to the most in Edinburgh?
First of all, I can’t wait to pick up my physical programme and get out the highlighter. And once there, getting the first shows done is a joy and relief, and then seeing as many shows as I can. Then, a celebratory wine late at night in a buzzing courtyard. Bring it on.
What’s next for the show?
Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote tours constantly, I’m delighted to say, and I’m about to do both shows on a cruise ship for the first time – Cunard transatlantic to New York. Then my first ever Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrotes in NYC and Provincetown, and then in LA in July.
But both shows mostly tour the UK and Ireland – so keep an eye out at www.solvealongamurdersherwrote.com and www.itsamystery.co.uk. But of course – come and see me at the Fringe.
