1st year at Soho Walthamstow

Soho Theatre Walthamstow, the sibling venue to Soho Theatre on Dean Street, turns 1 this week.

It’s in the former Granada cinema (Grade II* listed) on Hoe Street, a short walk from Walthamstow station – and not far from pub theatre Ye Olde Rose and Crown. If you are driving to the venue, parking is available at the 17&Central shopping centre.

With three bars and a tastefully restored auditorium, Soho Theatre Walthamstow is fast becoming a favourite destination for north-east Londoners and those looking for entertainment outside of the West End.

Interior of Soho Theatre Walthamstow

The 960 seater theatre has had an impressive opening season of over 100 stand-up comedy and cabaret shows, and is currently playing host to End of the Rainbow, a musical drama about Judy Garland’s final years, starring Jinkx Monsoon.

Before opening last year, I interviewed interior design consultant Jane Wheeler about the project to bring this wonderful building back to life:

Over the past year, Soho Theatre Walthamstow has welcomed over 130,000 audience members – including 17,000 Waltham Forest residents who have enjoyed shows for £15.

The new venue has been garlanded with awards:

Next up for the theatre is a workshop showing of  Grayson The Musical – inspired by artist Grayson Perry – as well as comedy from Meera Syal, Lenny Henry, Sue Perkins, Richard Ayoade, Ruby Wax and Saturday Night Live UK’s Paddy Young and Larry Dean, alongside work for families including Alice in Wonderland and Tall Stories’ The Gruffalo.

Continuing its remit for bold and inclusive programming, the Soho Theatre Walthamstow can look forward to a long and prosperous future.

You can also book for a building tour – I highly recommend this – here.

Check out the venue’s programming on its website.
