Film review: The Marbles

The Marbles

David Wilkinson’s The Marbles takes on one of the most enduring cultural controversies in European history: the fate of the Parthenon Marbles.

As lawyer Mark Stephens reminds us early on, “They were never the Elgin Marbles. Elgin was the thief and the despoiler.” The film traces how Lord Elgin, serving as British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, removed priceless sculptures from the Acropolis under a letter granting him permission merely to “take away some pieces of stone with inscriptions and figures.”

Set against the backdrop of the Ottomans’ admiration for Britain after Napoleon’s defeat in 1801, Wilkinson’s documentary carefully reconstructs the murky circumstances that led to the Marbles’ transport to Britain—and their eventual transfer to the British Museum in the 1860s.

The museum itself, and its defenders, remain conspicuously absent. Instead, Wilkinson draws on a mix of experts and cultural figures to probe the ethical, legal, and emotional complexities of ownership, nationalism, and “cultural justice.”

Dominic Seawood offers a measured reflection on artistic integrity and moral responsibility, while others question whether museums can truly tell the “full story” of looted artefacts.

Wilkinson situates the debate within broader precedents of repatriation – from Glasgow’s return of a Lakota Ghost Shirt to the ongoing restitution of Benin bronzes – raising uncomfortable questions about empire’s lingering shadows.

While the film occasionally veers into political commentary, particularly around Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, its real power lies in its refusal to simplify.

Wilkinson’s personal health issues as filming progresses adds urgency to his plea: that cultural heritage deserves more than bureaucratic inertia or political point-scoring.

The Marbles doesn’t settle the argument—it reanimates it, forcing us to confront what justice might look like when history itself is in dispute.
