Dances With Films: Observance

Presented as a TV pilot in the 28 Jun block at Dances With Films, this half hour film written by and starring Elyssa Nicole Trust, and directed by Emily Lerer features a grieving secular Jewish woman who begins to find healing in Judaism.

I found the character of Gabby one who is presented as both selfish and vulnerable. Before we see the film’s title we learn her sister has died, she has an intimate relationship with a boyfriend, and she has flunked her Masters by partying too much.

She finds a lifeline and a college place, but it comes with conditions to become an observant, kosher, chaste Jew. I found these conditions to be somewhat abrasive and unfair on someone who seems to have a strong bond with her mother and boyfriend.

She changes tack very quickly, so that Observance feels as if it showhorns the plot of several episodes into one. If we are to accept the change and evolution of Gabby’s character, why not the others around her?

I appreciate this may be a personal story and project, and it is well-cast and performed. I just wanted to know why someone who lived as Gabby did might completely change her views to the point of excluding and hurting those who loved her.

So, reservations aside, how does this stand up as a pilot, and would I want to see more of this as a series? I think it succeeds in introducing characters and leaving it open to follow the story, which I liked. I would probably watch, but I think the target market may be those who subscribe more to the healing power of religion.

Observance shows at this year’s Dances With Films festival.
