Plays from the cheap seats: The Seagull

Welcome back to our series about cheap seat options available in the West End and slightly beyond.. This week, we are at Barbican Centre’s Theatre.

Expectation

Good view of the stage, able to lean forward to bypass the bar in from of the gallery. Ample leg room and comfortable seat.

Reality

This show is staged with an additional apron at the front of the stage and a short walkway, where a lot of the action is situated.

This makes the seats in A row restricted without being sold as such. The walkway can be seen by peering through the gap between the bar and lighting on the front of the gallery, but a view of the whole stage as set up for this production is not possible.

Evidence

My photos show the view if you are sitting back in your seat, and then when leaning forward. You can just make out the walkway between the lights facing the stage.

I couldn’t find a production photo showing the whole stage, but this capture from the Barbican’s TikTok shows a different angle from the stalls:
