Welcome to today’s installment of Celebrating London theatres. Today it is the turn of venues beginning with “Q”.
Queen’s
Out at the Eastern end of the District line in Hornchurch, the Queen’s Theatre is a mid-scale producing theatre seating 507. Originally opened in 1953, the current building opened in 1975 and also includes a stage in the foyer. It has a long history of presenting musicals and hosting “the best in live entertainment” with eight shows a year.
The current artistic director is Douglas Rintoul, who runs the theatre alongside executive director Matthew Russell.
Queen Elizabeth Hall
Part of the Southbank Centre complex, the QEH opened in 1967, and seats 916. As well as concerts, recitals, and cabaret, the venue has also hosted the occasional play and musical. The foyer stage also hosts shows and concerts, and the QEH boasts its own roof garden.
Questors
Based on Mattock Lane behind Ealing Broadway, the Questors is home to a non-professional in-house company producing twenty shows a year across its two spaces (Judi Dench Playhouse and Studio). Originally opened in 1929, the present building dates from 1964.
